NIGHT WATCH: songs for the sea
for being woken up at midnight to go on watch. for pulling on jumpers and oilskins and wellies, hobbling up the stairs onto the deck. listening to the crack of the sails, rushing to tighten the ropes. palms rough against the railing as you watch the horizon for lights. you go to the mess to make tea, adjusting to the sway of the ship, warming your fingers around the mug. you sit in silence with the rest of the watch crew and look out for the first traces of a sunrise. the sea rolls steadily beneath the hull, the wind is muffled by nighttime, and below the deck the rest of the crew sleeps, trusting your watch to keep them afloat. there are no seagulls this far out at sea, nothing to remind you of the land.
these are the songs that will keep you warm until the sun has risen. songs that will never drown out the sound of the sea.
